This is the sequel to Highland Conquest so go check that out first.

Joshua Sinclair just wants to get away from war and get back to his family, which is ironic because he is the Horseman of War. Kara Flett needs the Horseman of War to save her fallen clan from the Scottish oppressors that are taking advantage and killing her people. When the two tumble together into bed without Kara telling Joshua what she needs, will he help her people or leave and let them be killed?

First off, what is up with the horses? They just care so much about the horses, which is not a bad thing, but I just found it a weird quirk of the books and it made the books unique in their own sense.

Wow the names in this book were beautiful and I loved the meaning behind them. Kara means love and Joshua is biblical meaning Jehovah is salvation which I felt really represented their characters in the book. Kara does everything she can for her clan and Joshua being the Horseman of War. Also the attention to every little detail was phenomenal. I felt like I was in 1590 Scotland and I don’t normally feel like this with a book. Plus there were these little hilarious jests that were just delightfully thrown in that would bring in light to a dark situation.

Probably the best thing about this book is that you really see Joshua grow up in a sense. In Highland Conquest, you saw him as very war-hungry and just wanting to jump into battle. However in Highland Warrior, we see him actually trying to move away from war, wanting to go back to his family. I thought that McCollum did such an amazing job on transitioning his character between the two books and his character growth was on point.

Then there was the instant connection between the two characters from the moment they meet until the very end. They were a very refreshing couple and I liked that Kara never gave up on him.

Last thing I am mentioning is the quotes and research. Every chapter at the beginning included quotes from The Art Of War by Sun Tzu. This was a nice little touch that I felt really tied into the book bringing it a lot of character. And the amount of research that went into this book was incredible. At the end it included the true story behind it and the language was just beautiful. This all just made the book tie together oh so perfectly.
