4.5/5 stars

Cain Sinclair was intrigued by Ella Sutherland since the moment he saw her. Ella learned to hate Cain just a few moments afterwards. Fast forward a few years later when they meet on the battlefield, Cain has a tough decision on either to wed or execute his enemy, the current ruler of the opposing clan, Ella Sutherland.

I was in a reading slump before I read the first in the Sons of Sinclair series and it cured me of it. I was interested in the book immediately and found that it kept my interest and it made me want to read more and more.

There were no major problems with the book for myself and the only reason I rated it a 4.5 was that I found that there would be paragraphs that were hard to read or what not. But other than that, it was a fantastic read. I especially enjoyed the old timely language that fit the time period. You could tell that Heather McCollum spent a lot of time researching the time and place of everything that happened. In the back of the book, it even tells of the true story behind this novel. She includes the real people from this time period in the book which I just find fascinating. It really shows the dedication that she has to her writing.

The romance in this was phenomenal. I was entranced by Cain and Ella’s dynamic. It was hilarious to read as Cain thought of her as a challenge and her denying that she would sleep with him, while because it was a romance novel, you knew it was going to happen. It was very entertaining and I could not put it down.

Another thing I loved about this was that you suspected the plot twist but McCollum took in a way that you didn’t think would happen. It was kinda obvious that Hannah, Cain’s sister, would help Hew escape but I didn’t expect all of the aftermath after that. Plus I didn’t expect the twist about Ella but I won’t spoil that to you.

I am really excited to read the sequel that comes out in April however the wonderful Entangled Publishing sent me an advance copy so I will be reading that and having the review out shortly. I highly recommend reading Highland Conquest and all of McCollum’s other books, they are the perfect things to read on any occasion.
